THE GEOGRAPHY OF AN OBJECT

How landscape becomes material.

PENTHESILEA — MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY

Every object begins before it becomes an object — in a color, a surface, a landscape, a memory.

Before form, there is observation.

A line of water crossing the land. The changing surface of a stone. Vegetation reflected in still water. The pale trace left by salt, wind or light.

At PENTHESILEA, landscape is not approached as an image to reproduce, but as a language to interpret.

Uruguay offers a geography of subtle transformations. Along the Atlantic coast, deep blues meet mineral surfaces shaped by wind and water. In the wetlands, greens shift constantly with vegetation, reflection and depth. Fresh water produces another register: translucent, quiet, almost weightless. At first light, the landscape changes again, introducing amber, coral and warm mineral tones.

These observations become a starting point.

Not a drawing of a landscape, but a palette.
Not a representation of water, but a surface.
Not a stone reproduced in ceramic, but the memory of its irregularity.

FROM PLACE TO MATERIAL

The translation from landscape to object is never literal.

A color may become a ceramic glaze. A reflection may suggest nacre. The irregular edge of a stone may determine the silhouette of a piece. A movement observed in vegetation can become a woven structure or the rhythm of a necklace.

Materials begin to enter into dialogue: ceramic with stone, pearl with fiber, translucent surfaces beside opaque ones.

Each brings its own resistance and possibility.

This is where an object begins to acquire its own geography.

THE OBJECT AS A TRACE

Making does not erase the origin of these references. It transforms them.

The finished piece carries fragments of what came before it: landscape, drawing, material experiment and gesture.

Some traces remain visible. Others disappear completely.

What matters is not whether the wearer can identify their source, but whether something of that initial observation remains present in the object.

A landscape does not have to be represented to be carried.

Sometimes it survives simply as color, texture, weight or form.
